About Us

Pipestar Kennels is a labor of love for Jason Rice, built on the belief that exceptional training begins with individualized attention. By maintaining intentionally low volumes, we ensure every puppy and dog receives the focused time, care, and high-quality experience they deserve.

Located west of Missoula, MT, our kennel sits on dedicated training grounds designed to support all facets of developing top-tier Versatile Hunting Dogs. We also utilize additional private and public properties to reinforce learned skills and provide diverse field exposure.

Jason’s passion for working with dogs began in his youth as a 4-H project, when he trained a Springer Spaniel in basic obedience. Over the years, he owned and trained multiple dogs, but his commitment to bird hunting ultimately led him to his first Versatile Hunting Dog—a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon named Piper. Today, Jason continues his work with two exceptional Griffs, Knut and Siggy, who represent the next generation of Pipestar’s training and breeding program.

After joining NAVHDA in 2013, Jason immersed himself in the organization, assisting hundreds of members with their dogs while advancing his own dogs to NAVHDA’s highest levels.

The name “Pipestar” originated from a nickname Jason’s niece and nephew gave to Piper. When it came time to name his first litter in 2017, Pipestar Kennels was born. That initial breeding produced a large litter and brought with it the demands of managing a full household. Jason decided to pause breeding until he retired from running a Land Use Consulting firm. In 2025, he left his career and invested in a property with exceptional potential to develop Versatile Hunting Dogs.

Jason remains deeply involved in NAVHDA and is passionate about supporting others in their training journeys. His dedication culminated in becoming a NAVHDA Judge in 2023.
